The wise mind walks the middle path guided by logic on one side and intuition on the other.
The Stoics often get judged and labeled as devoid of emotion. This couldn’t be further from the truth. They do however recognize that emotions must be regulated in order to harness their true power and benefit. The way we do this is through a process of recognition, assessment, and regulation.
I think this is why Stoicism did what I thought would be impossible and made me a Star Trek fan. In the original series Spock represented the purely logical while Kirk portrayed the intuitive. Often the adventures they confronted were resolved through actions and decisions they worked together to solve.
In the Next Generation we start to see an evolution in the complexity of the emotions portrayed by the characters along with an element of working together to overcome challenges and grow. Warf and Data. Warf struggles with his Klingon rage and warrior culture to find a place in the “peaceful” Federation while Data longs to gain more human emotions.
We can see in the adventures of the Star Trek Crews the cationairy tale of being void of emotions or lacking in thinking can lead to challenges, failures, and tragedy. And, we also get to see that the solution often lies in the relationships and synergies we can develop with the people around.
As a Stoic… it is illogical to not be a fan of Star Trek.
