Exploring Emotions: SALUTE Report

In the military, the SALUTE report is a standard method for observing and reporting key details about potential threats. What if we applied the same structured awareness to our emotions? Emotions, like enemy movements, can be complex and hard to track until you apply a system. By adapting the SALUTE report you can have a familiar framework to help you spot, assess, and respond to your emotions with greater clarity and control.

The Emotional SALUTE Report

S – Size: How big is this emotion? Use a 1–10 scale to gauge its intensity. A low-level emotion might feel like background noise, while a 10 could completely hijack your focus. Size doesn’t always equal importance, but it does impact how urgently you need to respond.

A – Affect: What is the emotional tone—positive or negative? In psychology, affect refers to the observable expression of emotion. A positive affect might come across as energy, warmth, or excitement. A negative affect might show up as tension, withdrawal, or irritation. Understanding the emotional tone helps you gauge how it’s influencing your mindset and behavior.

L – Location: Where in your body do you feel this emotion? Emotions often show up somatically. Anxiety might live in your chest, anger in your jaw, sadness in your shoulders. Learning to recognize these somatic signals can give you early warning signs before emotions escalate.

U – Utility: What is this emotion doing for you? Every emotion has a function. Anger can reveal boundaries. Sadness can point to something you care about. Anxiety can help you prepare. The question isn’t whether an emotion is “good” or “bad”—it’s whether it’s useful. If not, how can you redirect or release it?

T – Time: When did the emotion start? How long has it lasted? Emotions can pass quickly or linger for days. Noticing timing helps connect your emotional state to events, interactions, or even physical states like hunger or fatigue. Timing provides critical context.

E – Effect: What impact did this emotion have? Did it improve your performance or damage a relationship? Did it help you make a decision or paralyze you with indecision? Taking note of the effects—internally and externally—can guide how you choose to respond next time.

So What?

Clear situational awareness of your emotional state can make all the difference. The Emotional SALUTE Report gives you a structured way to pause, observe, and respond rather than react. It’s a simple but powerful habit that builds emotional intelligence and tactical resilience.
