Be Prepared

I grew up in the Boy Scouts of America, and the motto “Be Prepared” is something that has stuck with me over the years. When I was younger I thought being prepared meant taking care of very practical things like having all the gear you needed for a camp out. As I got older I started to see the need to be prepared in more ways than just being well supplied with all the right gear.

I think it is more helpful to add some detail to the motto.

Be prepared – Physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and socially.

  • Be prepared physically by eating healthy and physical training (not just exercise).
  • Be prepared mentally through education, training and experience.
  • Be prepared emotionally by facing your emotions, taking responsibility for them and learning to regulate them.
  • Be prepared spiritually by seeking connection with the highest of ideals.
  • Be prepared socially by nurturing and sustaining your relationship.

Think for a moment what your life could be like if you focused on these areas with purpose and intent. You would be stronger, faster, smarter, emotionally stable, morally and ethically aligned, and surrounded by the people that matter to you.

Sounds pretty good to me.
