Exploring Emotions: Surprise

In the world of intelligence and security, surprise is the enemy. We spent careers training to prevent it, mitigate it, and if all else failed… respond to it without hesitation. Surprise was often the first domino in a chain that led to challenges or catastrophe. Ambushes, attacks, betrayals aren’t always detected or prevented and you learn quickly that being surprised can cost lives.

But what about surprise in our personal lives, outside the context of war or national defense? In our daily lives, outside the battlespace, surprise doesn’t always signal threat. Sometimes it shows up as a plot twist that wakes us up. A sudden opportunity. A person you never expected to meet. A challenge that invites you to grow.

Surprise, in this context, is not the enemy—it’s the invitation.

What is Surprise?

Surprise is an emotional and physiological response to the unexpected. It catches us off guard by interrupting our assumptions, breaking our patterns, and snapping us out of autopilot. It’s neither good nor bad in itself. What matters is how we interpret it.

Surprise can trigger fear. It can also spark curiosity. It depends on whether we see the unexpected as a threat… or as a possibility.

Surprise as a Call to Adventure

In storytelling, the hero’s journey always begins with a disruption: the unexpected call to adventure. A letter from Hogwarts. A hologram from a droid. A knock at the door.

Surprise pulls us from the known into the unknown. It stirs the waters of the psyche and reminds us that we’re alive. For many people, personal growth begins with an unexpected moment—an injury, a loss, a compliment, a realization. These moments challenge us to leave our comfort zone and step into a new way of being.

Responding to Surprise

When surprise strikes, we typically fall into one of three patterns:

  1. Prevent – We try to anticipate and control every variable. This can lead to hypervigilance and anxiety. It’s exhausting—and often impossible.
  2. Avoid – We pretend surprise can’t happen. We stick to routines, resist change, and shut out anything new. But this often breeds stagnation.
  3. Embrace – We stay open and flexible, adapting to the changing circumstances. We train our nervous system to tolerate uncertainty. We develop the psychological flexibility to engage with what’s unfolding. No matter how strange or challenging it may be.

When we embrace surprise we build resilience. Not blind optimism, but skilled responsiveness. It’s the kind of posture that allows you to stay grounded in the chaos of life without needing total control.

Prevent, Avoid, or Embrace?

The key is knowing when each strategy is appropriate. In national security, preventing surprise is vital. In personal growth, avoiding it may limit your evolution. Embracing surprise when it’s safe and meaningful, can lead to transformation and growth.

Surprise can be the harbinger of danger. But it can also be the knock on the door you’ve been waiting for.

When life surprises you, ask:

Is this a threat—or an invitation?

Sometimes, the difference is simply how you choose to respond.

Explore Your Experience

Here are a few questions to help you start your own exploration of the way you respond to surprises. It’s ok to just think about them, but they could be very powerful prompts for a sprint write!

1. When was the last time life surprised you? How did you respond?

2. Do you tend to avoid, prevent, or embrace the unexpected? What would happen if you chose differently?

3. Can you think of a surprise in your life that turned out to be a gift?

4. How do you train yourself to stay grounded when things don’t go according to plan?

4. What’s your relationship with control—and how does that shape your response to surprise?

So What?

Surprise isn’t just something to brace against, it can also be something we can learn from. Even if you were trained to predict and control, embracing the unexpected can feel risky. But sometimes growth lives on the edge of what we didn’t see coming. If we can pause, reflect, and choose our response, surprise becomes less of a threat and more of an opportunity. Maybe even a call to our greatest adventure.
